Adult Services Librarian Job Description

Immediate Supervisor: Director

Positions Supervised: Circulation Clerks and Volunteers (in absence of Director)

Job Responsibilities: Manages all aspects of library service in the adult services department with duties regarding circulation and patron assistance, collection development, programming, cataloging and public relations. Works closely with the Director.  Performs various administrative duties.  Assumes duties of the Director when necessary.

Qualifications: High school graduate or equivalent.  Ability to work accurately and with attention to detail.  Advanced proficiency in e-mail, word processing and spreadsheets. Strong working knowledge of traditional and electronic resources including web sites, databases, and social media; high comfort level and familiarity with common hardware and software, including eReaders. Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records.

Additional Qualifications Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in library science or related field, associate degree, or two years’ experience working in a library.  Evidence of continued interest in the field of library work. 

Salary:  To be negotiated by the Library Director and the Board of Trustees.

Evaluation: Each employee will be evaluated by the Library Director at least once each year.

Work Week: 40 Hours

Essential functions:

Primary Duties:

  1. Responsible for planning and implementing innovative adult programs that encourage library use and enhance the image of the library in the community.
  2. Trains public on use of library technologies and library resources; provides instructional technology programming; incorporates relevant technologies into library services and programs. 
  3. Works closely with Children’s Librarian to plan and implement all-ages programming.
  4. Evaluates and maintains the adult collections and makes recommendations for collection development based on community needs, usage levels, and relevance of materials.  Classifies and evaluates materials, utilizes statistical data, and reports for collection maintenance, and makes withdrawals according to library guidelines.  Processes and catalogs library materials.
  5. Creates attractive and timely displays and merchandise library materials. 
  6. Performs all circulation services, including but not limited to material charge and discharge, reserves, overdues, and basic patron assistance such as, finding materials to match reading interests.
  7. Manages circulation and interlibrary loan maintenance such as reserve shelf, juvenile internet list, etc.
  8. Performs opening and closing procedures.
  9. Coordinates the scheduling of public meeting rooms and ensures effective communication with staff and patrons regarding meeting room use.  Meeting room set up for Board Meetings and Computer Classes, etc. 
  10. Assists adult book clubs with planning, book selection and reservations.
  11. Assists in the training of new employees and volunteers. 
  12. Assists in collecting library statistics. 
  13. Responds to patron questions and situations in accordance with library policy and in a manner to enhance the reputation of the library as a public service organization. 
  14. Performs in-depth reference service as needed. 
  15. Maintains current knowledge of organizational procedures, processes, policies, and operations. 
  16. Provides outstanding internal and external customer service.  Demonstrates a positive attitude and supports library goals and objectives. 
  17. Represents the library at community events and in community organizations; maintains positive working relationship with partner institutions. 
  18. Attends staff meetings as called by the Library Director.
  19. Attends NORWELD, OLC, and other professional meetings, workshops and conferences as budget allows.
  20. Publicly supports the Library Board of Trustees, the Library Director, and library policies and promote a positive image of the library.
  21. Performs additional duties as assigned by the Library Director.

Specialized Tasks:

Provides administrative and professional assistance to Director as needed. Acts in absence of Director, responsible for solving staff and patron problems as appropriate; explains and enforces library policies and procedures.

Familiar with many aspects of public service operations including circulation and basic reference services and technology.

Ability to handle a frequently fast-paced position with numerous interruptions.

Physical stamina is required to rearrange furniture and put away materials, and to push and pull loaded book carts and other library equipment and materials.  Physical activity includes, but is not limited to, prolonged periods of sitting, as well as periods of standing, mobility, stretching, bending, and stooping.
